Increased Risk of Secondary Cancers

The attached study done on the entire CML database in Sweden tends to support this. In fact it suggests a 50% higher rate of second cancers excluding basil and squamous cell skin cancers.  While the absolute chance is reasonably low, 50% increase is nevertheless significant.

All the more reason to take good care of ourselves particularly diet and exercise.

Is this another reason that dose reduction and in some cases trying to achieve Treatment Free Remission?  Answer no-one knows and will be another 10 years before there is enough data, but it encourages me to try. Three weeks till next appointment - as far as I know maintaining PCRU on 200mg Imatinib for 8 months so far.

Thank you so much for this piece of news, haven’t we got enought to worry about without being told this.We all know it’s possible but we don’t want to keep being reminded with posts like this ,I don’t anyway .I come on here looking for good news and people feeling well stories .Please stop frightening us all.

Basically the same stats for coffee drinkers and bacon lovers. The Sweds obviously are at greater risk from over indulgence of tanning products.

I wouldn't worry about it too much and there has been lots of good news in recent years of curing CML.  Just take care of yourself; exercise, eat well, stay out of the sun and you should be fine.

Felix - the post was not meant to frighten anyone; just to raise awareness of a potential risk to us CML'ers in hopes that we all will take good care of ourselves to tip the odds of more cancer back to normal.  Diet and exercise are at the core of this.
