Possible Cancer...

Categories:

So a few months ago I went to my physician for a yearly check up and she does blood tests every year. When she did this blood test my Iron was low in which it showed that I was Anemic and my white blood cells were high (but she said she wasn't that worried about the WBC but more worried about the Iron). In order for her to see what type of anemia deficiency I had, she had me do more blood tests and so that's when those blood tests showed that I was Iron anemia deficiency. She wanted me to take Iron pills and since I'm such a baby and can't swallow pills she referred me to a hematologist oncologist where I had Iron infusion treatments.

Weeks later after the treatments my iron is great, yet my white blood cells were still high at 12.36x10^3 ...this made her worried (although they weren't that high) a little bit because my WBC had been high for about 3 months and are still high to this day they seem to increase every time I take a blood test. So she had me do a FISH, BCR-ABL rearrangement blood test and a Flow cytometry acute leukemia immunophenotypic profile, and a regular blood test. In the results section on the patient portal it shows:

  1. Dimorphic population seen in my normal blood test
  2. Leukemia/Lymphoma Panel by Flow for the flow cytometry
  3. FISH BCR/ABL t(9;22) for the FISH test

I'm just so confused to what these results mean. I don't meet with my doctor for about 2+ weeks to find out the results and take more blood tests. I think that there may be more results coming but I am not sure. With these results CML shows up...but I just don't know if that's true or if I should just calm down and wait.

Hi there,

It's a pretty scary time when you are not sure what's going on inside of you. We all understand that phase of things.

To me it looks like your doctor is running a number of tests to look for the presence of blood cancer. The one we would know about on this forum is the FISH test - this is looking for CML. However, it sounds like they haven't got the results of any of these tests yet - is that right?

A FISH test is done on bone marrow - have they asked you to do a bone marrow aspiration?

Try to stay calm. Your doctor is probably trying to rule out things at the moment, and running a load of tests for lots of different things because of the elevated white blood count.

David.

With the FISH test I only had to give blood for. She said that depending on the results from that then I would do the bone marrow aspiration. I am also uncertain if the results are done since she did say it could take 4-6 weeks. I'm not sure if the results I put earlier if they're some of the results or just stuff they're looking for...it is definitely 100% confusing.

Normally a bone marrow test is ordered to determine
what “Type“, of Leukemia the patient has.
It also can assess the stage of that type of leukemia.

There are four types of leukemia. Each type has four stages.
Generally speaking...Of course...

You might be over annualizing this.
Your white blood count is not high at all.
People get these counts with hay fever. Or a common cold.

There is no perfect blood results. We posses variables in our biology
good enough to live long and prosper.

So say’s DR Spock...A person that knows everything.
