Supporting my dad

Categories:

Hi there,

My dad has recently been diagnosed with CML and I want to help him in whatever way I can. My mum is currently in remission for breast cancer so can't do too much therefore it has mostly fallen onto me. Does anyone have any advice for how I can support him more than just been there for him?

Thank you!

Just by asking how you can help your dad as shown me how much you are helping and supporting your dad, I am 61 and was diagnosed in January 2015, my son is 28 and from minute 1 it may seem if I wrote down what he’s done for me in support he’s done nothing, but I know at any time he would, and I know he cares, just like your father will know with you. We’ve never met but I promise you you’re dad will know your thinking about him and more importantly that you love him.

Hi, your Dad is lucky that he has you to help him. The vast majority of CML patients do very well, and the mental side is often every bit as challenging as the symptoms and side effects of the drugs. I'd suggest you and he get to understand the condition well, so that you and he know what is going on and can ask the specialists the right questions. Use the "about CML" and "Patient Info" tabs above and learn what you need over a bit of time. Anything else you want to know ask on here.

Good luck.

Hi, thank you so much for responding! I will continue researching and will take full advantage of this site, thank you for your advice its really helped!x

Hi there thank you so much for responding to me! Your words have touched me greatly thank you. I'm sending love and prayers to you and your own diagnosis thank you again x

Bless your heart.  My three children are very supportive and it means the world to me.  NCCN Guidelines for patients  Chronic Myeloid Leukemia is a very good publication to purchase.  Very easy to understand.  Also has a question to ask your doctor section.  I highly recommend you getting something like this.
