Hi all. I have been on Gleevec for almost 3 yrs and recently have had an issue with an abccess on my inner thigh beginning 6 weeks ago . It was lanced 2x, antibiotics for almost 3 weeks. Better but not gone although the infection is gone. Am scheduled for surgical removal next week. Has anyone had any experience with Gleevec or other TKI's and breakdown of skin/abscesses etc?

ABCESS RELATED TO GLEEVEC?

Hello,
abscesses are formed if phagocytosis does not work properly (mainly neutrophils, NK cells) or in case of presence of agressive pathogenic bacteria. What pathogen is causing this ? I suppose Staphylococcus aureus...(most common) Do you suffer any other chronic disease? This could contribute. Any injury before abscess? Infection - skin infection, tonsilitis? If you have low neutrophils, it could be the cause. I do not think the abscess is directly connected with imatinib, but if it lower your counts, then could be. Have you had any blood test done during abscess treatment ?
I fortunately do not have personal experience, but I hope this helped a little.
Eva
Thanks Eva, last bloods in January were all good. Never had any issues like this before, not pleasant but hoping it isn’t related to the Gleevec. But as we all know when we have anything like CML we are hyper-vigilant 😱
